As anticipated, last week the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an order requiring more studies on the risks of transvaginal mesh by manufacturers. Transvaginal mesh – also referred to as vaginal mesh and pelvic mesh – has come under fire after years of reports linking serious injuries to the devices. In September, an F.D.A. advisory panel recommended that such studies be required.

Transvaginal mesh is a medical device primarily used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. Over the years, significant problems have been reported to the FDA including:

• Vaginal mesh hardening
• Infection
• Vaginal pain
• Vaginal mesh erosion, protrusion and extrusion through the vagina
• Organ injury
• Pain during intercourse

If you or a loved one has had surgery utilizing the transvaginal mesh and experienced injuries, it’s important to speak with an experienced New Mexico products liability attorney who is familiar with vaginal mesh complications.

The FDA first reported problems with the mesh in 2008, but stated that such problems were rare. However, in the time span from 2008 to 2010, the increase in adverse events related to the mesh increased 10-fold, leading to the most recent warnings. According to reports, in 2010 about 185,000 women underwent treatments using the medical device and about 15% of those women treated with vaginal mesh experienced complications. A study published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology also determined that the mesh did not provide any greater benefits than the traditional method using a patient’s own ligaments.

Recent reports have linked finasteride – marketed as Propecia – with persistent and possibly irreversible sexual dysfunction. Propecia, which treats hair loss, works by decreasing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that causes hair loss.

In fact, doctors have known for years that Propecia has been linked to sexual problems including impotence, but a recent Propecia study performed by George Washington University found that as much as 38% of all users have adverse sexual events based on dosage and duration.

These side effects include low sexual desire, problems with orgasms and erectile dysfunction. In addition to the sexual side effects, additional life threatening ailments may arise including an increased risk of developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer and breast cancer.

The study also determined that sexual dysfunction associated with taking the drug is persistent, and not reversible as was previously thought. The Propecia study found that the side effects from taking the drug lasted an average of 40 months, with 20% of the men having side effects lasting more than six years.

News reports indicate that a New Mexico man was killed in an 18-wheeler crash near the border of Colorado/New Mexico. According to reports, Ruben Gomez was travelling northbound on U.S. 550, just past the New Mexico-Colorado state line when his tanker truck veered off the road. Gomez attempted to correct and steer the big-rig back onto the road when his truck began to roll. The fuel tank ripped off the truck during the roll, spilling about 4,000 gallons of gasoline. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trucking collisions are some of the most deadly motor vehicle accidents. Due to the sheer size of an 18-wheeler, when a big rig truck accident occurs serious injuries and fatalities are often the result.

Many potential causes for truck accidents exist including driver error, negligent roadway design, and defective truck parts. In some cases, the trucking company who hires a driver may even be at fault where they demand unreasonable hours, excessive loads or employ other negligent or reckless work requirements. An experienced New Mexico truck accident law firm can investigate a truck accident and determine what factors may have played a role in causing serious personal injury or wrongful death. Where a party’s negligence causes harm, it may be possible to recover compensation for your injuries, or to provide damages to the survivors in a wrongful death action.
